Station: [2] The kitchen garden
You probably didn't expect to find a kitchen garden in the quarry. But it was actually needed, because the building we're about to go into also once housed the canteen. The workers came early in the morning. That means they usually had breakfast and lunch here. Small vitamin bombs such as parsley or fresh dill were very popular for seasoning stews and hearty potato salads.
There was always a wooden tub in the small garden where rainwater collected. This is where the workers would draw drinking water for the next shift before heading from the canteen to the quarry.
The garden is also the evening meeting place for our two animal employees, the old fox and his flying friend, the long-eared owl. Both will introduce themselves later. For now, we go to the museum to learn about the hard working life of the stone workers and, yes, the stone workers too.
Later, why later? I am Eulalia, the owl. I live up here and have a say in the management. After all, this is my home. And yours too, of course, old fox.
Ah, Eulalia, you know how humans are. The crown of creation and always first. We'll get involved in time. But first, let's go to the museum, come on, I know where there's an open window, we'll sneak in. They don't have to see us right away, our guests.
