Description

The Granite Mining Museum in the Königshain Hills presents the history of industrial stone mining from 1880 to 1976, which was characterized by the noise of machines, blasting and heavy lorries during the day, while animals roamed the disused quarries and workshops at night. At that time, the companies Königshainer Granitwerke C.C. von Thaden & Co. GmbH and C. Besser & Nachfahren dominated granite mining until production ceased in 1976. Today, the museum conveys the history of the place, the workers, nature and the granite itself through a tour that also gives animals and stones a symbolic “voice”.
