F: Something had been discovered in a cellar on Michaelsbergstrasse.

M: Strange pots buried in the cellar floor.

F: In 1984, news of the discovery quickly spread. Until then, no similar find had been known in Germany. But during the period that followed, more and more people came forward – and reported that similar pots were also buried in their cellars.

M: Here in Bönnigheim, pots were found in cellars including those at Grabengasse number 2, Meierhof number 1, Ringstrasse number 25 and Karlsstrasse number 17. Kurt Sartorius excavated such pots in some 40 cellars. Take a look at our map to identify the locations where they were found.

F: Meanwhile, several hundred sites have come to light all over Germany. The most recent evidence dates to 1964 in the Black Forest. In the 1960s, the custom of afterbirth burial seems to have gradually died out. One reason may be that more and more children were being born in hospitals rather than at home.
