“Nothing happens without wood on the construction site. Carpenters saw, hammer, plane and file. Without the carpenters, the other craftsmen are unable to do their jobs. The bricklayers and masons need planks and beams for their scaffoldings. Only then can they build walls and vaults. The carpenters don’t just saw through thick planks, however. Up high in the building – and of course at the tops of towers – they build the trusses needed for roofs. Because carpenters are so sought after, many assistants have their own accounts, without including a foreman. As long as they don’t get caught, at least! In that case they don’t only lose their jobs, they also get a beating from the master craftsmen. That’s how it used to be...”
