Station: [19] Wages
“The best day for all craftsmen is payday. Yet not everyone is handed coins. Rutger also pays his workers with a free place to sleep and food. The workers are usually particularly happy about a keg of beer. Craftsmen in those days also had to be good at mental arithmetic, because so many different coins are in circulation on the building site: Rhenish gulden, Brabantian stuber, Double Shilling Albus. The Florentine Goldgulden was especially sought after. Such gold coins most craftsmen never laid eyes on, however. Only masters like Arnt Johannsen or Laurentz von Brachum earned enough to carry these valuable gulden in their pockets.”
