“Strictly speaking, Schloss Horst is made up of many small individual pieces. The bricks used to build the shell of the castle are especially important. The bricklayers lay brick for brick – and Schloss Horst grows higher and higher. The source for all those bricks is nearby. Rutger von der Horst is having bricks fired from clay not far from the construction site. That way, there’s always a steady supply of bricks. Once the bricklayers have completed their work, it’s the plasterers’ turn. The plaster contains calf hairs to make sure it will stick to the wall. Today that’s obviously no longer the case...”
