„Large and bright, representative and simply beautiful: this is how Rutger von der Horst envisioned the new castle. And so, it was built: Large stone cross windows let in a lot of light, the rooms were large and clearly structured, the stairwells wide and representative. The facades were decorated with ornaments and figures, artistic paintings adorned the ceilings and walls. The guests of the house were amazed by the fine sculptures and the exquisite furniture. Yes, the lord of the castle could be satisfied: this was the life of a self-assured and power-conscious nobleman! Nothing really reminded one of the medieval predecessor castles. Even the few embrasures and cannon ports were only decoration - they lacked the openings for firing!”
