“Big farmhouses are also a place for animals: not only dogs and cats are allowed to sleep inside, but also cows and horses. Kept separate only by a gate, they are kept in stables in the front part of the house. During the winter, keeping farm animals in this manner produces a very welcome effect; the animals exude considerable heat. This possible use does however have its limits: those are exceeded when their smell becomes too strong. Pigs, sheep or goats normally are not allowed indoors; they have separate stables.”
