Master bricklayer Steffen von Duisburg reaches for the pendulum level to check his assistant’s work. He knows almost every stone, not least because he was one of the first craftsmen on site. He was already present for the process of clearing away the debris left over from the burnt-out castle – he was the one to demolish the old castle keep. Over the last years, his sons Friedrich and Walter learnt their father’s craft under his guidance. The master is currently working on the shell of one of the castle wings.
