Xanten, a town in western Germany, looks back on a long and exciting history. Even in Roman times, Xanten was an important settlement and capital of the Roman province of Lower Germania under the name "Colonia Ulpia Traiana". The city was a center for trade, crafts and the military. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Xanten fell into oblivion until the Middle Ages began. In the 11th century, Xanten developed into an important trading town and was granted city rights. Xanten Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, was built in the 13th century and is now the town's landmark. Over the centuries, Xanten has experienced numerous wars, including destruction during the Thirty Years' War. Today, the city is best known for its historic old town, the Xanten Archaeological Park and its Roman heritage. Xanten thus combines history, culture and nature in a unique way.
