Visitors to the quiet town of Steinhude today probably find it hard to imagine how tough and deprived the lives of local people were just a century ago. Today, the Steinhude Fishing and Weaving Museum gives an insight into the work and lives of ordinary fishers and handloom weavers. In a historic half-timbered house once owned by an old-established Steinhude family, the scene is set for history to come alive. During their trip into the past, visitors are even invited to pitch in themselves. They can rummage in the walk-in hope chest, try on some hand-woven linen clothing, or have a go at weaving in the weaving room. The Toy Museum next door, with its antique doll's houses, tin toys and old Käthe Kruse dolls, brings back memories of childhood in days long gone by.
