The art of flying
As "the Flying Man" and the founder of human flight, Otto Lilienthal is one of the world-famous German technology pioneers.
But contrary to expectations, the museum is not an aircraft museum. The name Lilienthal is associated with many technical, cultural and social innovations. Almost all construction kit systems from Lego to Fischer-Technik can be traced back to Lilienthal patents; he wrote steam engine history with the development of the "Lilienthal small engine system", he was the first Berlin entrepreneur to introduce worker profit sharing, and his name also appears in the history of the Berlin Volksbühne. For Lilienthal, the aircraft was a "cultural element" with which he combined the fulfilled vision of world air travel and the failed vision of eternal peace.
The museum in his hometown of Anklam was honored as an "FAI recognized museum" by the "Fédération Aéronautique Internationale" in 1996 and was the first East German museum to receive a "European Museum of the Year Award" in 1999.
