Station: [353] Individual Education

As vigilant and critical, even „furious“ reader, Schocken commented on and opposed or supplemented his reading. His systematic way of thinking becomes clear in his „Lesefrüchten,“ or „Readers’ Fruits,“ a self-designed grid system with numbers, in which he noted important quotes and page numbers so that he could easily find them again.

As layman Schocken addressed very varied research and study subjects. In doing so he selected according to his interest and concentrating on specific sections. This acquisition of knowledge helped him to build a very individual, but multifaceted education. He put his historical, philosophical and literary knowledge to effect in his occupation as businessman, too. Schocken’s education, ability to quote off the cuff, crystal clear intellect, apt powers of analysis and judgement meant he made a great impression on his environment.
