Station: [133] Reconstruction of the Skull from Steinheim
This virtual skull reconstruction was made at Max-Planck-Institute in Leipzig and it shows the skull of what we refer to as the Steinheimerin, or Steinheim Lady. A 250,000 year-old deformed skull of a woman was found in Steinheim in 1933. The skull type represents a transitional form from Homo Heidelbergensis to Neanderthal and is therefore also referred to as pre-Neanderthal. Perhaps the big-game hunters from Markkleeberg were also this type of human?
Please start the animation film. The 3-D video shows you the different phases of the skull’s reconstruction. Anthropologist, Dr. Philipp Gunz, describes each step of the process that made the skull recognisable in its original form.
