Station: [18] Lindenstamm Room / Coronation
The glove is – Queen Victoria's, and was worn at her coronation.
The coronation took place on the 28th of June 1838 at Westminster Abbey. Victoria travelled in the gold state coach from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in grand procession. The population greeted their young queen with enthusiasm. She in turn found her people energetic, humorous and fun-loving, which was much appreciated.
Some four hundred thousand visitors came to London for the coronation festivities. During the five-hour ceremony, the Archbishop of Canterbury crowned Victoria with the Imperial State Crown, which had been made especially for her. For the first time, members of the House of Commons were permitted to attend the coronation, a nod towards the UK’s increasing democratisation.
Among the guests were Princess Feodora and Prince Ernst – the first members of the House of Hohenlohe-Langenburg ever to attend a coronation. It was to become a tradition that continues to this day.
After this insight into the lives of two families, one princely and one royal, you can now look forward to a view of the Jagst Valley and its wonderful landscape.
