Paul tells us: "Our ship was wrecked in a storm on the coast of Malta. All our fellow passengers were rescued. The locals were surprisingly friendly to us and even lit a fire for us. The rain started again and I collected an armful of dry wood and threw it on the fire. Suddenly a viper emerged from the bundle and bit my arm. When the people saw the snake hanging on me like that, they shouted at me: "It must be a murderer! The gods want revenge on him. With a jerk, I flung the animal off me and everyone waited anxiously for me to suddenly drop dead. But when they saw that I was still alive after a while, they changed their minds and said to each other: 'He's a god!
