"Happy New Year!" is the wish of many German speakers at the turn of the year. Rutsch comes from the Hebrew "Rosh", which means "beginning or Lord". The Jews wished each other a good start to the new year, a good Rosh. It is the first word in the Hebrew Bible, which Christians call the "Old" or "First Testament".
