Station: [23] Death in Eisenach
F: "He passed away in my arms. Our wishes came true, his that I would close his eyes, and my prayer that he would have an easy death..."
M: Fritz Reuter died on the 12th of July 1874, aged 63. His wife Luise went on to survive him by twenty years.
F: Summarising his life, Reuter expressed appreciation and gratitude:
M: I became what I always longed to be."
F: Yesteryear's convicted enemy of the state became a celebrated writer and a role model well beyond the borders of Mecklenburg. Three days after his death, he was solemnly laid to rest in Eisenach's main cemetery, where visitors can still view his grave. Since 1897, his villa in the Helltal district has housed another museum devoted to Fritz Reuter's life and work: the "Reuter Wagner Museum".
