Station: [706] The Timmerkamer

F: The Timmerkamer was what we'd now call a tool shed... but a shed displaying excellent workmanship! The panels of the oak timber frame have classic wattle and daub infill: woven willow or hazel branches covered in clay.

M: A joiner's bench, a lathe and other tools are kept in here. Because on a farm, almost everything was made and repaired on site by the farmer himself. The nearest specialist tradesman was a long way away, so when a fork broke or a wagon or boat needed to be repaired, the farmer and his farmhands would do the work themselves. The farms usually included some woodland where timber could be cut, and it would be stored in here to dry.

F: The Timmerkamer is located on the long side of the big farmhouse, quite close to the great door. The wide roadway between the two buildings can be closed off by a barrier. That keeps the pigs, for example, from snacking in the farmer's garden. Anyone on foot who wanted quick access to the tool shed would simply use the stile – a couple of steps, and you're there.
