Station: [1] Welcome

F: Hello, and welcome to the audio tour of the Ammerländer Bauernhaus Local History Society. There's a great deal to see and discover in and around Bad Zwischenahn.

M: The Local History Society, which is steeped in tradition, is based on the southern shore of the local lake that claims to be a sea, the Zwischenahner Meer. For more than a century, the society has been running an open air museum that recreates the way of life on an old Ammerland farm.

F: It all started in 1909 or 1910, when the Farmhouse, the Storehouse, the drive-through barn, the Hirelings' House and the Single Room House were built – or rather rebuilt – in quick succession. Because almost all the buildings on the site are originals, centuries old, that were dismantled in various Ammerland villages and reassembled here.

M: In the early days, all the buildings in the Open-Air Museum were in use. There were families living in some of the houses until well into the 1960s. Even now, the place is still buzzing. During Bad Zwischenahn festival week in August, on Mill Day at Whitsun (or Pentecost) and basically every weekend throughout the summer months, you can immerse yourself in the lives of the Ammerland farming families.

F: This audio tour is designed to give you a first taste. But if you want to discover all the ins and outs, you might like to book a personal tour. You can find out more from the Local History Society's office. The phone number and email address are on your screen now.
