Station: [28] Wire Edging
If you need a neat border or a drip edge on your sheet metal and don't want to cut yourself on a sharp edge, you need to understand all about wire edging. This involves folding the edge of the sheet twice to create a kind of channel. Depending on the size of the fold, a piece of wire or a metal rod is inserted into the channel. The channel is then hammered shut with drawing blows from either a mallet or a folding hammer.
When the sheet has closed around the wire insert, the wire can be removed, leaving an empty space (similar to a curl). However, depending on what the sheet metal is to be used for, the wire can also be left inside the edge to further reinforce it.
