“Rutger von der Horst stood in front of the smoking ruins of his castle. Everything had been lost! However, it did not hit him too hard, as he saw the loss as a chance to rebuild. What would it look like, should he completely redesign the castle in the image of the magnificent palaces of France? With four towers, grand halls, many pillars and luxurious decorations? This is what he wanted his new castle to look like. And so he ordered the construction of the new castle in 1554.”
