Station: [50] Fine dining

„Guests were always lavishly served in castle Horst - and the more important and prestigious the visit, the more festive the table was set. Then everything that was not necessarily part of everyday life, even among the nobility, was put on the table: first of all, a lot of meat - venison, pork, beef and poultry, and then as many imported things as possible: lemons and oranges, or even the still very foreign artichokes, plus plenty of exotic spices. Table decoration also played an important role: on fine table linen, between candlesticks and flower arrangements, pewter or ceramic tableware was provided, napkins in the form of huge linen sheets were laid out; even the sinfully expensive Venetian glass was brought out in Horst on such occasions. Only cutlery was not available - in those days every guest had to provide his own! Beside the table on a sideboard, particularly precious showcases or even show dishes were often displayed on a sideboard, which served exclusively for festive decoration. And a special feature was the tumbler offered in castle Horst: it could only be turned on again when the contents had been completely drunk. Well then: Cheers!"
