„The aristocracy of the world dressed nobly - and preferably in black! This was a way of orienting oneself everywhere in Europe to the strict Spanish court dress, which was considered the measure of all things fashion. Until the middle of the 16th century, noble men and women still attached importance to colour and slit clothing: Garments, dresses and even trouser legs were artfully slit to reveal the colourful clothing beneath. But then the slit fashion became a little more reserved and from then on, the fine people - this can be seen clearly in the portraits of this time - wore more and more elegant black. A little jewellery served as a distraction: the fine gentleman took the beret, which was decorated with diamonds and feathers, as a headdress. And the lady of the house adorned herself with an expensive necklace - precious stones have always been an elegant solution...”
