Station: [41] Cabinets
“The educated people of the Renaissance did not only accumulate knowledge, but also things they thought had exceptional characteristics: exotic plants and animals from distant countries, unusual art pieces, relics from ancient times, as well as curiosities and oddities of their own time. All was accepted into the art and oddity galleries developing in palaces and manors. From time to time, they even filled entire halls with these objects, which were the predecessors to our modern museums. Smaller houses were satisfied with filling cabinets – in a sometimes haphazard manner – with art and these mysterious objects of the world. It is highly likely that such a collection existed in castle Horst as well, as it would have suited the taste of the lord perfectly.”
