“The humanists were the forward thinkers of the Renaissance, who changed the view of the world. The human was now the focus of research and philosophy, contemporary humanist learning demanded the study of Hebrew, Greek and Latin. It was this educational ideal which impacted Rutgers deeply. As a pupil at the renowned monastery secondary school in Emmerich, he was taught by the Westphalian humanist Matthias Bredenbach, a friend of the great Erasmus of Rotterdam. These early impressions influenced Rutger during the design of the castle: for example, the fireplaces were decorated with Greek and Roman mythological imagery and planetary gods of stone enriched the façade of the entrance.”
