“During the spring of 1554, Rutger von der Horst stood in front of the ruins of the castle. This moment was also a chance for the young lord of the castle to plan the design of the entire estate from scratch. He was inspired by the magnificent palaces and aristocratic houses, which he had admired during his travels through France. Spectacular new buildings with geometrically exactly designed rooms, inviting portals and grand halls. Everything was decorated with classic pillars, ornaments, rich wood carvings and sculptures. This, even if on a smaller scale, was the image Rutger von der Horst wanted to create at home as well. A castle with four wings and mighty pavilion towers on each corner was the dream. And so, he ordered the construction of the new castle in 1554.”
