Station: [30] Arboretum

“It’s a nice feeling to look out of the window and to cast one’s contented gaze across ones’ estate. Over four hundred years ago, Lord Rutger von der Horst would have been standing in the exact spot you are standing now. Nowadays, the grounds are dominated by the residential buildings of “Stadtquartier am Schloss Horst”. During the 20th century the internationally renowned Horst horse race track was operated here. However, during the 16th century, it is in exactly that spot that the arboretum of the castle, the so-called “Bungert” or “Bowengarten”, was located. A bridge over the castle gardens was the direct link to the park filled with carefully cared-for fruit trees. These trees were used to supply the aristocrats. As a result, even apricots and peaches were served fresh.”
