Station: [18] Half-timbering and loam plaster

“Not all of the castle walls are bricked. In many places the more traditional technique of half-timbering is used. To this end, a structure of wooden beams is erected. The partition may then be filled with bricks, but in most cases a meshwork of willow twigs is used, which is then covered with a mixture of straw and loam. This ancient technique has been in use in these parts since long before bricklaying was even thought of. The German word for wall, ‘Wand’, is derived from this practice – the term ‘winding’ having been used to describe the process of assembling the twigs to its netted state.”
