Station: [13] Town Hall and Fortifications
Curving paths, huge trees, little groves – the Renaissance Palace Park is in the style of an English landscape garden. And before you move on, take a moment to look around:
Laid out on gently rising terrain, the garden connects the palace and the town. At the top of the slope, by the road, there’s a yellow ochre building. That’s the old Amtshaus, where Dornburg district’s local authority was based. The medieval town fortifications used to run along in front of the building, though only few remnants have survived. The small blue house was once part of them. It marks the course of the old town wall and was built during the Baroque period. But its foundations rest upon an older structure that served as a guard house way back in the Middle Ages. Downslope, where the modern road is now, was the site of one of Dornburg's town gates, the "Neues Thor", or New Gate.
That brings us to the end of our Dornburg history trail.
We hope you’ve enjoyed it and look forward to welcoming you again soon. Perhaps for our traditional Rose Festival, which is held annually on the last weekend in June. Or on “Schlössernacht”, the Night of the Palaces, at the end of August.
For now, we’ll just say: thank you for listening and see you again...
