Station: [1] Farina Duftmuseum – about our museum
“I have discovered a scent that reminds me of a spring morning in Italy, of bergamots, mountain narcissus and orange blossoms just after rain. It gives me great refreshment, strengthens my senses and imagination,” wrote the young perfumer Farina in 1709 in a letter to his brother. In this year the perfumer Farina created the most famous water in the world - Eau de Cologne. He named the fragrance Eau de Cologne, in honour of the city of Cologne. The citrusy perfume soon became popular among the upper classes. Napoleon and his family, Queen Victoria and the poet Goethe were just some of the famous customers of the original Eau de Cologne from Farina. Due to its success, Eau de Cologne is designated today as a perfume category. Today you can visit the birthplace auf Eau de Cologne with a visit of the Farina Fragrance Museum. There you can experience over 300 years of perfume history. If you would like, you are welcome to smell a variety of different essences. Detailed descriptions of the extraction of essences and the development of perfumes, clearly convey the effort, creativity and talent of a perfumer.
