Station: [9] Historic Cooperage
Barrels, tubs small and large, vats – the containers of the past were fashioned by the cooper.
Right next to the entrance, in the old gate guard’s room, there’s now an historic cooper’s workshop. It was in operation for a hundred years, from the late 19th to the end of the 20th century – of course not here, on the ground floor of the old watch tower, but in the city of Gröditz in Upper Lusatia.
Four generations of coopers had toiled in the workshop before the museum acquired it from the family in 2012 and set it up in here.
Feel free to go inside and find out about the craft, which was crucial in times past. If you’re hier in winter, unfortunately, the cooperage will be closed, but you’re welcome to look through the windows and catch a glimpse of the workshop. You then find the media station discussing the cooperage inside the museum.
