Station: [1] Welcome in the Foyer
Hello and welcome to the “Haus im Moos” in the Upper Bavarian “Donaumoos” fen.
The Donaumoos lies to the south-west of the city of Ingolstadt and is about 12 kilometres wide and 30 long – equivalent to 8 miles by 18. Our “Haus im Moos” is a museum of local history and an open-air museum, an environmental station and a conference and education centre with accommodations for groups. The House has been operated by the “Stiftung Donaumoos” foundation since 1997.
The stuffed animals on display are used in the training for hunters that takes place here. Among the specimens on show are the western curlew the pheasant and the lapwing. These rare avian species live close to our site. If you look around the corner, you can see a beaver in its lodge – beavers are also extremely active Donaumoos residents.
The House hosts conferences, seminars and many other events. Outside, in our extensive grounds, a stroll along our experience trails will take you to our museum restaurant and the houses that are part of our open-air museum. You’re welcome to go inside to view them. At the far end, southern Germany’s largest herd of European bison, or wisent is well worth a visit.
We hope you enjoy your tour of our museum and have fun exploring the “history of the Donaumoos”. If you have any questions, or want more detailed information, please feel free to ask a member of museum staff at any time.
Our tour begins by the four clear cylinders we call our “bog pillars”.
