HELIGOLAND MUSEUM can look back on more than a hundred years of tradition. The island’s first exhibition hall opened in 1899 as the Nordseemuseum, the North Sea Museum. It showed exhibits of local bird life as well as displays of algae. These days, the museum has strong links to both the beauty of the natural world and the history of Heligoland and its people. The museum’s spacious interior and the colourful “lobster huts” in the courtyard host varying displays devoted to the history of art and culture on the island. Heligoland Museum is a lively meeting place for locals as well as visitors.
